September Rains

My Calendar of Haiku - September

It’s around 9 o’clock in the evening - already dark. A brief respite from the rain; the full moon (almost) playing ‘peek-a-boo’, through the clouds. The street light flickers - on - off - on. Our garden Robin sings from a hazel in the hedge. Just for a moment ...

 lights flicker
after the storm
a robin sings

Robin (and Blackbird) will sing at night especially if near or under a street lamp, or if the moon is bright. Robin are highly territorial and sing all year round; their autumn song quieter and more melancholy sounding than their lively upbeat spring song.

Lovely build up in the haiku to the robin singing.

I enjoyed this post, September Rains, and especially your hokku/haiku, A Robin Sings. I would like your permission to display it in my Hokku Garden (collection)! The xeno-canto site is fantastic!! I will use it, often, now. Thanks!

I was thinking:

Lights flicker,
After the storm;
A robin sings.

but it’s entirely up to you. Both work, in my opinion.
Choose one and I will display it.
If you choose the former, then I’ll find a photo of a storm that has passed.
If you choose the latter, then I’ll find a photo of a robin singing.
Thank you for allowing me to display your verse.
Let me know!

A beautiful haiku, Clive. The last line is so effectively placed.

Lovely verse Clive! And a nice ‘conversion’ to hokku.

Beautiful, Clive, and perfectly complements the mournful robin I listened to just the other evening. Thanks too for the introduction to Hokku which will keep me interested for quite some while

This is so atmospheric Clive. I love the street light detail and that ‘after the storm’ feeling.
