Pied Wagtail by Winifred Marie Louise Austen, 1876 – 1964

Winifred Maria Louise Austen (1876 – 1964) was an English illustrator, painter, etcher and aquatint engraver. She was widely admired and collected; even the naturalist Sir Peter Scott – himself so able a wildlife artist – said Austen was, ‘certainly the best bird-etcher of this [last] century’.

An unused postcard from a watercolour print of a pair of Pied Wagtail by Winifred Austen and published by Royles – of unknown age. Royle Publications had a worldwide reputation as one of the oldest greeting card companies specialising in the reproduction of artwork for greetings cards, calendars, posters and fine art prints. Simply framed in a solid cherry wood type frame with gold slip and cream mount. Size: 10” (26cms) by 8” (20.5cms).

The picture looks a little fuzzy and out of focus – why is that?

Winifred Austen used a ‘soft-focus’ watercolour wash to create the background which has been faithfully reproduced by Royle’s when printing the Postcard. It looks fine when hung.
