A Chaffinch Calling - Cameos of Birdlife #7

first light a chaffinch calling from the cherry

One of the first birds to sing in Spring , often as early as February, and one of the first I hear on waking in the early morning. It is a particularly cheery song.

As the sun rises the chaffinch utters his bold challenge on the tree; the notes are so rapid that they seem to come all at once. Welcome, indeed, is the song of the first finch.

Hodge and his Masters - Richard Jefferies (1870)

Originally a woodland bird it has since branched out into farmland, parks, gardens, towns, pretty much anywhere ...

Artist Notes

I couldn’t find a painting of a Chaffinch in a Cherry but this postcard of a Chaffinch by David Morrison Reid-Henry (1919 – 1977), is stunning. David was a professional artist and illustrator of birds. Some of his best work is to be found in the many books by Dr D. A. Bannerman - Birds of Cyprus, Birds of the Atlantic Islands and many others including ‘The History of the Birds of Britain by Colin Harrison’.

Here is another example of his work and a short biography ...

The sounds you are able to capture are truly amazing. This little bird has a beautiful song to sing. He must have known you were coming.

We hear and see Chaffinch in the garden regularly but their numbers are low. Just a solitary bird regularly, occasionally two, but then we have a very small garden. Once again, I’m carried back to those walks along the Chilterns! Another trip down Memory Lane! 😊

If there are chaffinches singing here, theirs isn’t a song I recognise among others. I never see them in the very local area and park, but do sometimes see them in the dene.
