Autumn Robin - Cameos of Bird Life #14
An iridescent mist across the fields shines like a cloud of light above the dew-wet grass. As the day slowly finds its way the soft autumn sunshine, shorn of summer glare, lights up the fern, in glowing shades of yellow and brown.
And robins sing again ...
The Robin is passionately territorial, and having just recovered his voice, now sings all day from early morning to late at night. And will, on mild days, continue without interruption till the end of next June.
leaves fall ...
outside my window
a robin sings
If you’re lucky to have a garden he’ll never be far away even though you may not see him; his song will be ever present - greeting you as you first step outside in the morning and still singing as the lights go on at night.

Lovely song and haiku, Clive
Thanks Jane, our robins make it easy to write about them
Beautiful, Clive. Our robins are highly visible in the garden but not yet singing. Soon, very soon!
Thanks Sandra, our robins too are not in full song quite yet but yes – soon 😃
I love the verse, Clive, there is a wonderful contrast between the leaves falling quietly and the song of the robin! What a great little bird with its striking song. The painting is special too with its autumn colours. Marvellous! We have 3 robins in and out of our tiny garden, one definitely a youngster. I love them!
Thanks Ashley, it’s no wonder they are the UK’s national bird
Beautiful song here and a very nice haiku. Great job, my friend.
Thank you, I’m glad you liked it
[…] Clive Bennett composed this early fall hokku about the singing robin. […]
Beautiful hokku, Clive! I always love hearing the recordings and seeing the paintings and reading your prose (haibun). Thanks, Clive!
Thanks Ed. Been away for a few days so I’m even more behind with my comments. I’m glad you like my posts. And a big thank you for the transplants 😃
I came across a part fledged robin this morning on a branch a couple of feet away from me. We watched one another for several minutes!
Thanks Philip, they are very engaging birds and often totally fearless like your fledgling Robin. During the lockdowns many people reported on robins and wrens coming into their houses. Not new – Richard Jefferies wrote of a Robin coming into his bedroom and a wren singing from an iron window catch …
